A Micro focus X-ray Tube is used in situations that small flaw sizes
are critical. With a Micro-focus tube you get high resolution and high
magnification.
The key to magnification of a object using a microfocus tube is the
focal spot size.
Focal spot size determines the size of the actual X-ray source and is
perhaps the most fundamental of microfocus X-ray parameters and the
most difficult to quantify. There are many techniques for the calculation
of this parameter in existence today. The most relevant of which determine
the lateral resolution, or the smallest feature that can be seen by
the system in a top-down view, and then back calculate the spot size.
In essence, the smaller the focal spot size, the lesser the geometric
unsharpness and thus the sharper the image.
There are two types of Microfocus tubes: Open Tube and Sealed Source.
